What Are Crowns?
Crowns can be used to rebuild teeth that are very badly damaged from tooth decay or fractures. The tooth is prepared by removing the outer surfaces to allow a crown to be placed over the whole of any remaining tooth. Digital or traditional impressions are then taken to be sent to the dental technician to make the crown.
This approach can make extensively damaged teeth stronger than placing large fillings. Crowns are often used after a root canal treatment.
What Are Bridges?
Bridges can be used to span small gaps in your teeth, where a tooth has been removed. One or both teeth at the side of the space is prepared in a fashion similar to a crown.
Other options to consider instead of bridges are implants, which are placed directly into the bone, or a denture which is removeable.
Although bridges can work effectively careful consideration needs to be given, as they can increase the pressure on the remaining teeth, or increase the likelihood they will go on to need root canal treatment.
